Participating employers in the NJTMA Employee Benefits Association health plan have the option to elect whether or not to offer group term life insurance benefits to employees. If the employer elects to offer this coverage, the employer will establish rules for who pays for how much of the coverage. If any employee contribution is required, the employee always has the right to decline to participate. Do this by notifying your employer or the Plan (973) 882-3880.
Because term life benefits are affected by your age, to confirm how much coverage you have presently, please ask your benefits administrator at work, or call the plan at the above phone number.
Remember: Life insurance offered under a group term life program is not a permanent benefit. You are eligible for coverage ONLY if you are still covered (you are still a full time employee) at the time a claim qualifying event occurs. If you cease working full time (layoff, disability, etc.), you may convert your term life policy into a permanent policy -- but you must request to do this in writing within 30 days of your last full time day at work.
Questions? Contact your benefits administrator at work, or call the plan at the number above.
